Welcome, friend! I’m Debra.
I’m a writer, performer, explorer, crafter, yogi, Pilates enthusiast, art lover and lifelong experimenter, who enjoys the energetic mix of strength and flexibility in all things.
It took me a while to discover that learning to walk, trip, wobble, fall down, get up and occasionally run with grace is the key to a happy life. I spent a long time thinking that one day my capital “L” life would begin once I had achieved some elusive, nebulous and constantly shifting state that was perfect.
Then one day in an introductory meditation class, I realized that my life was happening now whether I enjoyed it or not, so I had better learn to enjoy it … quick.
That’s all to say that I’ve been on a meditation journey for most of my life.
I think, and science strongly supports, the idea of stillness and movement being perfect companions to connect body, mind and breath.
The yin and yang of movement and stillness is something that I think about a lot. I took part in my first yoga teacher training when I was in college. I was in great shape (although I didn’t know it or appreciate it then) and idealistic.
I thought the best workout was a sweaty one. Then 20 years later, I took another 200-hour teacher training after I was feeling career burnout (or at least fried around the edges) and I was recovering from a sports injury, surgery and rehabilitation.
During that second training, I learned about the power of empathy and the power of letting go. I choose an untraditional non-profit program that focused on trauma-informed teaching and encouraged yoga in untraditional places like breweries, hence the programs unconventional name Yoga Buzz. Elle, the founder and a great teacher told me one day that she never tries to convince people that yoga is good for them. She said, “I let yoga do that.”
And that’s kind of my philosophy for all movement, meditation or creativity. If something improves your life, you’ll know.
